Life Casts
These three dimensional painted and collaged sculptures, created from live models, are similar to negative and positive “photographs” of the human body. Wet plaster bandages are applied directly to a model’s oiled skin . When dry the rough “outside” becomes the sculpture, or “negative”. Positive casts require a different process. First, the model is covered with a mold making product, like alginate, to capture more of the detail and likeness of the model. Voila! A likeness, more like a dental imprint, is revealed. Positive casts are usually done on smaller areas like the face, hands and feet. Most of the pieces featured below were privately commissioned sculptures.
“Goddess 1” (rt) was awarded honorary mention in the October 2020 show: “Occupies Space,” and exhibited virtually at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art in CA
